The Suburbs 1 | Brett Williams | 2025 | 800 x 600mm

Sale priceR 17,250.00

In The Suburbs 1, the rigid geometry of a swimming pool occupies the foreground, its pale concrete edges enclosing a dark, reflective surface of water. Beyond it, dense greenery rises toward a mountainous horizon beneath a worn, uncertain sky. The composition suggests a quiet tension between the built and the organic—between the ordered structure of the pool and the surrounding landscape that seems to soften and envelop it. Once a site of communal activity and leisure, the pool now feels suspended and contemplative, its architecture intact yet emptied of movement. In this way, the pool becomes less a recreational space than a psychological container, holding traces of memory while existing between presence and disappearance.

The abandoned pools and emptied landscapes act as metaphors for grief, memory, and endurance, attempting to reconcile beauty with desolation while exploring how familiar environments hold the quiet residue of emotional experience.

Rudolf Liebenberg and Kelsey Ede laughing in the Boetiek art gallery
Rudolf and Kelsey, Curators of The New Art Collective

The New Art Collective

Rudolf Liebenberg and Kelsey Ede, Curators of Art at Boetiek

The art on the walls at Boetiek is curated by Rudolf Liebenberg and Kelsey Ede, the founders of New Art Collective: a Cape Town-based platform supporting and showcasing emerging and contemporary South African artists.

What sets Rudolf and Kelsey apart is that they curate as artists themselves. Rudolf is a painter whose work moves across acrylic, charcoal and joined wood, drawing out quiet, layered compositions in pieces like Coordinates of Becoming and The Gathering of Time. Kelsey works in mixed media and ceramics on board, building textured surfaces with a softness that lingers in works such as New Beginnings and Softly Scattered. Their own practice runs alongside the collection, and it informs every choice they make for the wall.

That dual perspective is what makes the Boetiek gallery feel personal rather than commercial. Rudolf and Kelsey know what it takes to make a work, so they choose pieces with an artist's eye: texture, atmosphere, emotional resonance, the way a painting will sit in actual living light. They place their own work alongside that of artists they champion, including Jackie Veldman with her quietly observed Flowers series and ceramics, Brett Williams with his suburban oil paintings, and Kristi Marie with her acrylic-on-canvas studies framed in kiaat.

The result is a collection that feels curated rather than stocked. Prices span from small ceramic pieces to substantial canvases, but every work has been chosen with the same intention: art that holds its place in a home, year after year, and that brings the story of a South African studio along with it.

Rudolf and Kelsey rotate the collection as new work comes in, so the wall you see today will not be the wall you see next season. Visit often, look slowly, and ask us about an artist.
